Shine On

March 18, 2008

Your cheeks burned a brilliant red.
When he was near, or you simply spoke of him.
I knew then what you were feeling and rejoiced
with you. Even though as a Mother I worried.

He gave you his class ring which touched the
old fashioned girl in you. If the phrase “going Steady”
had been in, you would have been proud to use it.

He kissed you in the way the Prince kissed Cinderella;
that magical story that so captured you years ago.
You had found him, and he had found you.
What a lucky young man he was to have been in your life.

Now I see you are experiencing another first.
The heart ache that love also often brings to us.
But, Oh what we learn my beautiful child!
What we gain, I promise you, will best the hurt some day.

You have grown and changed. Each happening does that for us.
Each heart break a lesson in what we will and will not
accept for ourselves the next time. What we need and how
much we are able to give.

Blame wastes time, your hurt is echoed by his.
I wanted to hate him, but I saw his eyes.
He was devastated to speak his truth. For you.
Because you are so beautiful and kind and he knew this of you.
As we all do.

In time you will see him again and not feel the hurt so
horribly. You will once again smile at him and call him a friend.
To lose love is horrific I know, to lose a friend as well is
unnecessary when they are as gentle and kind as you two
have always been to each other.

You were both given a gift of the romantic love you had always
dreamed of. Some day you will remember what you were given
and smile again.

For now, cry, just cry buckets honey, alone and with others.
Be with those that love you here and out there.
There are so many who see your beauty.
I cry with you at this lesson you must learn.

Please know, someday soon you will smile brilliantly again.
Just as you always do.

Do not be afraid to give yourself this gift again.
Love is always worth the effort.

Shine my precious child, just shine on!
I am here, Mom

  1. AAAAAAAAAAhhhhh! What happened?! Poor kid, give her a big hug from me! Heartbreak sucks.

  2. OMG I’m in tears!!! You could’ve been writing that for me. You must be the best Mum (next to mine of course) out there. Your children are lucky to have a mother like you. I’m guessing they know that!

  3. Oh noooooooo!!!! What happened?!?! Do I need to hunt someone down and throttle him? ‘Cause I will SO do that!

Please give that gorgeous girlie a big hug from me!!!

Even though my own girlie is only 5, I have more experience with teenage heart break than you can imagine. I am the one the majority of my students come to when something like this happens. They want the adult support, but not from their parents, for some reason. I’m rather like a surrogate parent to many of them. It’s quite an honor, actually. I am VERY glad to see that your girlie can turn to you, just as it should be. You and Jan are both wonderful mothers.

  4. poor sweety…the first heart ache is the worst…give her alot of hugs from me…with as beautiful as she is some lucky guy will swoop in and make her smile again

  5. That was so wonderfully written!!
I’m really not looking forward to teenage years!! Even though I have boys, they still suffer from heartbreak!!
    Big hugs to her!!
